Much ado about Geo-Redundancy

Room 10Wed 13 May • 14:30–15:30Cloud & DevOpsIntermediate
Geo-redundancy comes up a lot when looking at cloud architecture. Everybody talks about it. Lots of people say they want it. But what’s actually involved in doing it? So, let’s take a real project scenario, already hosted in Azure and already Zone Redundant. We’ll talk about how we got to where we are, what’s driving geo-redundancy, and how we might get there from here. On the way we’ll talk about things like costs, geo-redundancy versus being able to stand up a new environment in a different region, composite SLAs and a whole lot more. What ‘s the difference between services that offer replicas in several regions and deploying a new instance? What kind of code changes to we need? Are we going for uninterrupted service? Automated failover? We all find ourselves challenged by management as to why our wonderful application isn’t running across multiple regions. If you want to engage with them in a serious discussion, this session is for you.

About the speaker

Rik Hepworth

Rik helps organisations use Cloud better as CEO and co-founder of Zure UK. Whether that is a new adoption where governance and management are key, or an application modernisation project where technology choice and team knowledge are important factors in success. Through his public speaking and community involvement, Rik is a recipient of the Microsoft MVP Programme award for his work with Azure. He is also proud to be a member of the Microsoft Regional Director Programme. As an event organiser, speaker and lapsed blogger, Rik is keen to share his knowledge with the community, and encourage and support others as they do the same. His grey hair is an indication of how long he has worked in IT, and in that time he's done most things you'd expect of an IT Pro: From crawling under floors pulling cables, to managing large scale automated OS rollouts, to architecting solutions for on-premises and cloud. Now he spends more time working with his customers' management, sharing that breadth of experience and learning.
